Indian fisherman killed in Sri Lankan Navy firing; Centre can’t be mere spectator, says Stalin

DMK Working President MK Stalin has condemned the killing of an Indian fisherman by Sri Lankan forces, and called for immediate embassy-level talks.

DMK working President Mr. Stalin has condemned the killing of an Indian fisherman by Shrilankan forces. He demanded that the Central Govt. should hold embassy level talks in the matter immediately and also to warn Srilanka suitably. He also deplored the act of shooting by Srilankan forces. However it is understood that the union govt. has already moved into action and that the high commissioner to Srilanka has taken up the matter with Srilankan P.M. Further he also requested the AIADMK run state Govt. to give Rs. 25 lakh solatium to the bereaved family (Tamil Nadu Govt. has announced payment of Rs. 5 lakh for the victim’s kin. Rameshwaram fishermen association president has also confirmed that more than 2000 fishermen were fishing well within the Indian waters when Srilankan naval personnel came to the spot taking them by surprise. Lankan navy officials allegedly did not even fire a warning shot. The case has been reportedly registered at the jetty police station. Meanwhile tension prevailed in the area as fishermen gathered in front of the hospital to protest the firing by the Srilankan navy. So also the workers staged a protest.
